Trail Running in Greece: A Mountain-by-Mountain Guide

Trail running in Greece means mountains such as Olympus, the Pindus range around Zagori, the White Mountains of Crete and Mount Taygetus in the Peloponnese, often within easy reach of the coast. Bib2Bib currently lists 94 trail entries in its catalog, heavily clustered in September and October with a smaller second wave from January to April. This guide walks through the largest events by mountain region, stating only what each race's own official page or rulebook actually confirms.

Why Greece is a trail destination

Greece packs several distinct mountain systems into a small area. Mount Olympus, in Central Macedonia, rises to 2,917.7 m at its highest peak, Mytikas — the highest point in Greece — across 52 peaks and deep gorges. In Epirus, the Pindus range holds Zagori, a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. On Crete, the White Mountains (known locally as Madara) count more than 55 peaks above 2,000 m. In the Peloponnese, Mount Taygetus dominates the skyline above Kalamata.

That variety means a visiting runner can choose between a coastal mountain, a gorge system or an island trail without needing to stay in one region. The guide below is organised by mountain area rather than as a flat list of races, because that is closer to how a runner actually chooses where to go.

Olympus: two different races, do not mix them up

The race in the bib2bib catalog based in Litochoro is the 36th Olympus Mountaineering Marathon, with 5 km, 15 km and 41.91 km distances on 5-6 September 2026. Registration runs through a run-events.gr event page, whose own page title confirms this same 36th edition.

Separately, the site olympus-marathon.com runs its own family of races, also based in Litochoro: a Marathon 44k, an Ultra 71k, a Vertical race, "Kopsi ton Aeton", Melindra 5k, "Olympia Trails", and a winter race, the 20th Cheimoniatikos Enipeas, on 13 December 2026. This is a different website, different distances and a different programme from the catalog Mountaineering Marathon. Before registering for an "Olympus race", check exactly which site and which specific event the announcement refers to.

The Pindus range and Zagori

Zagori Mountain Running 2027 runs 16-18 July 2027 — its 16th edition, per the official event site itself. The "Challenge" category is a two-day combination of 60 km on the Saturday and 33 km on the Sunday (93 km total), not one continuous 93 km outing. The remaining categories are TeRA (60 km), the Zagori Classic (33 km), the Half Marathon (21 km), Forest (10 km), Fun (5 km) and the kids' ZAGORAKI (1 km).

Zagori sits inside the Pindus mountain range in Epirus, and is listed by UNESCO as a Cultural Landscape. Nearby, the Vikos Gorge holds a Guinness World Record as the deepest gorge relative to its width — a useful sense of how steep the surrounding terrain gets — though the same source notes that other gorge advocates contest that claim.

Crete: the White Mountains and Ierapetra

The Sfakia Sky Marathon covers 44 km with roughly 3,050 m of elevation gain, on Saturday 24 October 2026, in Sfakia — the separate Sfakia Vertical Run runs the next day, Sunday 25 October. Per the race's own description, the route climbs to Pachnes, the highest peak of the White Mountains at 2,453 m, through a landscape of more than 55 peaks above 2,000 m.

On the same island, the 12th Kavousi Mountain Races take place on 18 October 2026 near Ierapetra, with distances of 0.5, 1.5, 8.7 and 22.3 km and elevation changes of around 510 m or 1,450 m depending on the route. Crete mountain system is distinct from Olympus or the Pindus — it should not be treated as an extension of mainland Greece.

The Peloponnese: Mount Taygetus

The 16th Taygetos Challenge is a two-day event, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 March 2027, from Kardamyli in Messinia — the organizer's own announcement explicitly calls it a two-day event. The previous edition (2026) ran a Vertical Speed category on the Saturday and the 5 km, 10 km, 22 km and 40 km distances on the Sunday; if 2027 follows the same pattern, those four distances would fall on Sunday 28 March, with Vertical Speed added as a fifth category on Saturday 27 March. The elevation of the highest Taygetus peak, Profitis Ilias, is reported differently depending on the source — around 2,404 m on Greek topographic maps, 2,405 m in the English Wikipedia infobox, and up to 2,407 m elsewhere — so it is given here as a range rather than a single figure.

Closer to the city, the Kalamata Mountain Run takes place on 20 September 2026 with 9 km and 25 km distances, a more accessible entry point into the same mountain system.

The islands

On Corfu, the Corfu Mountain Trail 2027 is scheduled for 8-9 May 2027 (a two-day event, per the official site), with distances of 12, 24, 44 and 103 km. On Andros, the Andros Challenge & Festival 2027 (11-13 June 2027) is a broader multi-sport festival rather than a single trail race, combining trail distances of 35, 15, 6 and 1 km with road-running and open-water swimming distances.

On Folegandros, the Folegandros Challenge Run runs on 26 September 2026 with 5, 10 and 21 km distances — smaller in scale, but a workable way to pair trail running with an island trip beyond the better-known Cyclades.

Backyard ultras: the hourly-loop format in Greece

A backyard ultra is run on a fixed loop that repeats every hour, with a fresh start on each lap for whichever runners remain — anyone who cannot finish the lap inside the hour is out, and the race continues until only one runner is left. The Makrakomi Backyard Ultra's own announcement describes exactly this format for its 6,706-metre loop.

Four such races appear in the catalog: the Makrakomi Backyard Ultra in Fthiotida (3 October 2026), the Mani Backyard Ultra in Stoupa, Messinia (12-13 December 2026), the Cretan Backyard Ultra 2027 near Heraklion (16 January 2027) and the Kefalonia Backyard Ultra 2027 in Argostoli (10 April 2027) — the latter three on a similarly sized loop of about 6.7 km.

When to run trail in Greece

Of the 94 trail entries currently in the bib2bib catalog, 28 fall in September and 33 in October — 61 of 94, about 65 percent, inside those two months alone. A smaller second wave appears from January to April (11 of 94, about 12 percent), which is where events such as the Cretan Backyard Ultra and the Taygetos Challenge sit. Summer is comparatively quiet month by month, with Zagori Mountain Running in July as the main exception.

This is a pattern observed in this specific catalog snapshot at the time of this research, not a general climate rule. Any individual race can move its date from year to year, and its own official page remains the final source.

ITRA points: how to read them correctly

Not every Greek trail race carries ITRA (International Trail Running Association) points, and the ones that do do not carry a fixed number — the point value is specific to a given edition and year, not a permanent feature of the race. A points figure from one year should not be carried over onto a different year of the same event.

In this research pass, an attempt to confirm a specific 2027 points figure through an automated fetch of an itra.run race page returned no usable value, because the figure loads dynamically through JavaScript rather than appearing in the static page content. The reliable way to check a specific edition points remains opening that race page on itra.run directly.

Safety and mandatory gear

Mandatory-gear requirements vary from race to race, and often from distance to distance inside the same race — there is no single list that applies everywhere. The official 2026 regulations for the Virgin Forest Trail (a race held for 20 years in Paranesti, spanning distances from 0.8 km up to 162.651 km — the shortest is the 800 m Special V.F.T., for participants with disabilities) require, only for its two most demanding distances (VFUT and NTR), a backpack containing a liquid bladder or container of at least one litre, a waterproof jacket, an emergency blanket, haemostatic spray, an elastic bandage, an emergency whistle, two headlamps with spare batteries, a second shirt, at least 1,000 calories of food, a charged mobile phone and a personal cup.

The same rulebook allows equipment checks at an undisclosed point on the route, with disqualification if even one mandatory item is missing, and it requires prior experience in similar races for three distances — VFUT, NTR and the Paranesti Path (P.P.) — not only the first two. This does not mean every Greek trail race shares the same rules — it means checking the specific rulebook for the race being entered, rather than relying on a generic list.

Frequently asked questions

What are some of the best-known mountain trail races in Greece?

Among the larger ones: Zagori Mountain Running in the Pindus range, the Sfakia Sky Marathon in Crete, the Taygetos Challenge in the Peloponnese and the Corfu Mountain Trail in the Ionian Islands. Use bib2bib's own trail filter to see every listed entry with its date and distances.

Do Greek trail races award ITRA points?

Some do, though not all, and the point value is specific to a given edition and year rather than a fixed feature of the race. Always check the current edition directly on itra.run before relying on a number.

Is trail running in Crete different from mainland Greece?

Yes. Crete has its own mountain system, the White Mountains, with more than 55 peaks above 2,000 m and a highest point, Pachnes, at 2,453 m — distinct from Olympus or the Pindus range on the mainland.

When is trail season in the Greek mountains?

In the bib2bib catalog, most trail races fall in September and October, with a smaller second wave from January to April. This is a pattern observed in the data, not a weather guarantee, and any individual race date can move from year to year.

What is a backyard ultra, and does Greece have any?

It is a race run on a fixed loop repeated every hour until only one runner remains. Greece has the Makrakomi Backyard Ultra, the Cretan Backyard Ultra and the Kefalonia Backyard Ultra, each on a loop of roughly 6.7 km.

Does every trail race require specific mandatory gear?

Not automatically — it varies by organiser and by distance. The Virgin Forest Trail, for example, requires a specific gear list only for its two most demanding distances. Always check the rulebook for the specific race.
