TRIATHLON GUIDE

Triathlon Races in Greece: The Complete Guide

Greece runs a full triathlon calendar, from the international IRONMAN 70.3 Greece at Costa Navarino to dozens of local sprint, standard and aquathlon series on islands and beaches. Bib2Bib currently lists 45 triathlon (multisport) catalog entries, with dates spanning from 25 April 2026 to 15 November 2026, plus two races already scheduled for April 2027. This guide covers the distances, the races with confirmed dates, monthly water temperatures and the role of the national federation.

Triathlon in Greece at a glance

Triathlon combines swimming, cycling and running back to back. In the bib2bib catalog, the 45 entries tagged with the triathlon discipline run mostly from April through November 2026 (plus two races already scheduled for April 2027), clustering around coastal venues — Spetses, Katakolo, Nafplio, Sounio, Alonissos — where the sea is warm enough for open-water swimming without a wetsuit.

Races split into two broad families: the international, branded IRONMAN 70.3 Greece on one hand, and a dense domestic programme of sprint, standard and aquathlon races on the other, organised mainly by the Triathlon Federation of Greece and independent organisers such as "whynot legacy" and TRIMAN.

If you need the format definitions first — what sprint, standard, middle and long actually mean — see the separate article "Triathlon distances: Sprint, Standard, Middle and Long," which walks through each format before you pick a race.

IRONMAN 70.3 Greece — Costa Navarino

IRONMAN 70.3 Greece is scheduled for Sunday, 25 October 2026, based at Costa Navarino in Messinia, Peloponnese. The 1.9 km swim takes place in Gialova Bay, the 90 km bike leg crosses the Messinian landscape, and the 21.1 km run passes through Gialova Village and the Divari Lagoon.

It is the only branded 70.3 (half-iron distance) event on the international IRONMAN network held in the country, which makes it the most internationally recognisable entry point for foreign athletes looking for a triathlon in Greece. For the full weekend programme, pricing and what remains TBA, see the separate article "IRONMAN 70.3 Greece 2026 at Costa Navarino."

Long-course beyond IRONMAN: TRIMAN 226

No race from the Challenge Family series (challenge-family.com) was found active in Greece — the geographically closest cities to have hosted a Challenge Family race are Istanbul and Gallipoli in Turkey, but neither appears active on the 2026 calendar.

The closest domestic full-("iron-")distance equivalent is TRIMAN 226, part of the TRIMAN series based at Olympic Beach in Katerini. The race's official page lists 3,800 m swim, 180,000 m bike and 42,195 m run — exactly a full iron-distance triathlon — and describes it as "the Triman Long Distance." The 2026 edition took place on 27 September 2026, run as the Hellenic Long-Distance Championship; the same day also hosted the middle-distance TRIMAN 51.5 (1.5/40/10 km).

The same TRIMAN series also includes, earlier in the year (May), a separate "half-iron" TRIMAN at the same venue, plus the shorter TRIFAST (sprint) and TRISWIM — so the bare name "TRIMAN" without a number is not always the same distance; always check the number (226, 51.5) or the title in the official announcement. TRIMAN 226 is not, however, the only domestic full-distance race: the federation's own official calendar also lists OLYMPOS-X (29-30 August 2026, Pieria/Mount Olympus), whose Full Iron category is a 4,000 m night swim, 191,000 m bike and 40,000 m mountain run — an even longer distance than TRIMAN 226. TRIMAN 226 remains the race that officially holds the Hellenic Long-Distance Championship title.

Sprint and standard series

Most of the domestic calendar is sprint distance (roughly 0.75 km swim / 20 km bike / 5 km run) or standard/Olympic distance (1.5 km / 40 km / 10 km). The catalog lists, for example, Spetsathlon on Spetses (16-17 May 2026), whynot legacy at Epidavros (31 May 2026) and IL PORTO Triathlon in Igoumenitsa (20 September 2026).

Independent organiser "whynot legacy" runs a full stop-to-stop series across the year — Messolonghi, Epidavros, Stratoni, Lake Plastira, Katakolo, Nafplio, Sounio — usually with standard, sprint and aquathlon categories on the same day, run individually or as a two-person relay. The federation's own Hellenic Olympic-Distance Triathlon Championship 2026 takes place at Schinias, Municipality of Marathon, on 4 October 2026.

Aquathlon and duathlon

Of the 45 triathlon catalog entries, 12 are explicitly labelled aquathlon (swim + run, no bike) — from independent events such as SitiAquathlon in Sitia (20–21 June 2026) and Alonissos Challenge · Aquathlon 65 (5 September 2026, 1.5 km swim / 5 km run), up to the federation's own Hellenic Aquathlon Championship in Kavala (6 September 2026).

Duathlon (run-bike-run, no swim) appears more rarely in the catalog; one example is the Super Sprint duathlon category (2.5 km run / 10 km bike / 2.5 km run) inside the 1st Triathlon Challenge Thermaikos at Nea Michaniona, Thessaloniki (11 October 2026).

Seasons and water temperature

Greece's domestic triathlon programme opens as early as late April (25 April 2026) and closes in mid-November (15 November 2026) — exactly the window when Greek waters are warm enough for open-water swimming without, or with only a light, wetsuit. Historical sea-temperature data for Pylos (near Costa Navarino, where IRONMAN 70.3 is held) puts the average at about 16.7°C in January, rising steadily from May (~19.3°C) to peak around 26.2°C in August, before falling again; February is the coldest month at about 15.9°C.

That is why IRONMAN 70.3 in late October (~23.3°C in the same area) still sits in a comfortable range for a wetsuit-free swim, while smaller aquathlon races in early spring or late November should be checked against each event's own wetsuit rules — something not covered here because it varies race by race.

The Triathlon Federation of Greece's role

The sport's national governing body is the Triathlon Federation of Greece, with its official site at hellastriathlon.gr. The site itself explicitly uses the abbreviation "TOE" (e.g. "athletes are required to become members of the Federation (TOE) when they take part in a race held under the auspices of TOE") — not "ETO."

TOE manages the domestic competition schedule and the National Championships, athlete and club registrations, publishes results, and represents Greece internationally through World Triathlon and Europe Triathlon. Athletes without a TOE athlete card can instead buy a Day Pass (10 euros) plus an Athlete Health Card, valid for that single race only.

How to choose a race

  • Want an international, branded long-course experience: IRONMAN 70.3 Greece, 25 October 2026, Costa Navarino.
  • Want a Greek full-distance equivalent: TRIMAN 226 in Katerini (2026 edition held 27 September 2026, holder of the Hellenic Long-Distance Championship title) or OLYMPOS-X in Pieria (29-30 August 2026, Full Iron category) — not a branded Challenge Family event, since none currently operates in the country.
  • Want a first triathlon or a quick distance: sprint categories (~0.75/20/5 km) in series such as Spetsathlon, whynot legacy or IL PORTO.
  • Don't want to cycle: aquathlon (swim + run), such as SitiAquathlon or the Hellenic Aquathlon Championship in Kavala.
  • Travelling with kids: junior aquathlon categories (e.g. at the whynot legacy Katakolo, Nafplio and Sounio stops) with shorter swim/run distances.

What this guide does not cover

Entry fees, qualifying times and training advice are out of scope for this article. Water temperatures refer to the Pylos/Costa Navarino area as a representative sample for the Ionian coast of the southern Peloponnese; they differ along other coasts (e.g. the Aegean, Thessaloniki) and should not be read as one figure for all of Greece.

The individual triathlon catalog entries carry checkedAt dates ranging from 29 August 2026 to 28 September 2026, not all on the same day; this article's own external sources (IRONMAN, TRIMAN, the federation, sea temperature) were checked directly on 29 September 2026. 2027 dates have not yet been published for most domestic series (whynot legacy, TRIMAN, TOE National Championships) beyond what is stated here.
