Running races in the Peloponnese: a month-by-month guide

The bib2bib catalog lists 45 endurance events in the Peloponnese, from May 2026 through June 2027; 44 of them clear bib2bib's indexability bar (an organiser or federation link, and a status beyond a bare discovery lead — the one exception is explained below). They span road running, trail, triathlon, swimrun, cycling and open-water swimming across five regional units: Laconia (Sparta), Arcadia (Tripoli, Vytina, Astros), Argolis (Nafplio), Messinia (Kalamata, Costa Navarino, Stoupa) and Corinthia (Lake Doxa, Loutraki, Xylokastro). September and October alone account for 27 of the 44 events — roughly six in ten — capped by the two-day whynot Legacy weekend in Nafplio and the Spartathlon's finish in Sparta. Below is what runs where and when, month by month, with a link to each race's own bib2bib page.

The racing map of the Peloponnese: five regional units, one autumn peak

The Peloponnese is a 21,549.6 km2 peninsula at the southern tip of mainland Greece; Tripoli is the seat of the modern Peloponnese Region, while the English Wikipedia's infobox separately lists Tripoli and Nafplio as the peninsula's "traditional capitals." The bib2bib catalog covers events across five of its regional units: Laconia, Arcadia, Argolis, Messinia and Corinthia.

Of the 44 indexable entries, 15 are road races, 10 triathlon, 7 trail, 6 swimrun, 4 open-water swimming and 2 cycling — a dense, multi-sport picture that goes well beyond Sparta or Mount Taygetus.

  • Argolis: 12 entries, 9 of them in Nafplio, inside the same weekend
  • Corinthia: 11 entries (the Frogman series, Lake Doxa, Loutraki, one brevet)
  • Arcadia: 7 entries, in Tripoli, Tyros, Vytina and Astros
  • Laconia: 5 entries in two towns — Sparta (4) and Georgitsi (1, same Municipality of Sparta) — from the Spartathlon to L’Étape Greece
  • Messinia: 5 entries, in Costa Navarino, Kalamata, Stoupa and Kardamyli
  • 4 more entries don't fit cleanly into one regional unit: two Tripoli-to-Sparta routes (one continues on to Mystras and Kalamata), one on the Arcadia-Argolis border (Artemisio), and GO Methana Open Water — Wikipedia places Methana administratively in the Islands regional unit, within the Attica region, not the Peloponnese, even though it sits geographically on the peninsula and bib2bib's catalog groups it here

Spring: Costa Navarino and the first triathlon and swimrun season (May)

The season opens in May with three events across three different regional units: a running festival in Messinia, a swimrun in Corinthia and a triathlon in Argolis.

Summer: Methana, Lake Doxa and the first road races of autumn (June–August)

June and July bring only open-water swimming, swimrun and one short triathlon in Corinthia; August adds the season's first three road races, in Arcadia, Corinthia and Laconia.

September: Spartathlon week, around Tripoli and Sparta

September packs in 9 events across Argolis, Arcadia, Laconia, Messinia and Corinthia, topped by the Spartathlon: a 245 km ultramarathon (245.3 km to the official checkpoint 75) from Athens, finishing in Sparta, the capital of Laconia. The race's own route page describes the finish: runners are welcomed "as heroes in front of the statue of King Leonidas," with an olive wreath and a cup of water from the Evrotas River. The 2026 edition started on Saturday 26 September and finishers were still crossing the line on the evening of Sunday 27 September — it has run every September since 1983, with one exception, 2020, when it was cancelled. For entry rules and how runner selection works, see "Spartathlon for beginners: the complete guide" — /en/articles/spartathlon-beginners-guide-what-is-the-race.

The same week, Tripoli hosts three separate road races of its own and Kalamata holds its own mountain event.

October in Nafplio: the whynot Legacy weekend

Nafplio, on the Argolic Gulf, was the first capital of the independent Greek state in the 19th century, per Wikipedia. In the bib2bib catalog it is also the single busiest location in the Peloponnese: 9 entries, all on the same weekend, 10–11 October 2026, as part of whynot Legacy — open-water swimming on Saturday, triathlon and aquathlon on Sunday. For the full programme and what remained unconfirmed as of the 31 August check, see the separate article "whynot Legacy Nafplio 2026: races and source status" — /en/articles/whynot-legacy-nafplio-2026-guide.

October beyond Nafplio: Costa Navarino, Sparta and Loutraki

October has another 9 entries outside Nafplio — two of them, in Vytina and Astros, are covered below in the mountains section; the remaining 7 are here, topped by IRONMAN 70.3 Costa Navarino: scheduled for Sunday 25 October 2026, based at Costa Navarino in Messinia, and already listed "Sold Out" on the official IRONMAN page. The full weekend programme, distances and what remains TBA are covered in "IRONMAN 70.3 Greece 2026 at Costa Navarino" — /en/articles/ironman-703-greece-2026-costa-navarino.

In the same window, Tripoli and Sparta host two sister ultra-distance races built around four statues of figures from Greek history: Theodoros Kolokotronis in Tripoli (start), King Leonidas in Sparta (the 80th km), Constantine Palaiologos in Mystras, and Grigorios Dikaios (Papaflessas) in Kalamata's central square (finish), per the organiser Athanatoi's own announcement. The Run of the Immortals continues on to Kalamata (142 km), while the King Leonidas Run stops in Sparta (80 km) — both start on Saturday 24 October 2026 in Tripoli.

Trail in the mountains: Taygetus, Parnon and Mainalo

Three mountain ranges across Arcadia and Laconia-Messinia host the catalog's mountain events. Mount Taygetus is the highest mountain in the Peloponnese: Wikipedia's Peloponnese article gives its peak, Profitis Ilias, as 2,407 m in the body text, while the English Wikipedia's own Taygetus infobox gives 2,405 m — a small cross-source discrepancy also flagged in bib2bib's own trail-running guide (which cites a third figure, 2,404 m, from Greek topographic maps) — /en/articles/trail-running-greece-guide.

The official 16th Taygetos Challenge is scheduled as a two-day event, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 March 2027, from Kardamyli in Messinia, per a Runner Magazine announcement dated 23 March 2026 — the race's own official site had not yet been updated with the detailed 2027 programme as of the 29/9/2026 check (it still showed the 2026 edition). The previous edition's distances were 5, 10, 22 and 40 km — /en/races/run-taygetos-challenge-2027. Closer to the city, the Kalamata Mountain Run (20 September 2026, see above) runs on Mount Kalathi (1,340 m), which "dominates over Kalamata and connects to Taygetus," per the event's own registration page — a more accessible entry point into the same mountain system, overlooking the Messinian Gulf. And the Tripoli-to-Sparta leg of the Run of the Immortals / King Leonidas Run runs, per the organiser's own announcement, "parallel to the ridge of Taygetus."

On Mainalo, the highest point is the peak Profitis Ilias, also known as Ostrakina, at 1,981 m — the highest point in all of Arcadia, per Wikipedia — and the range runs from southwest of Tripoli to northeast of Vytina. That is exactly where the 1st Vytina Forest Trail takes place: Sunday 11 October 2026, in Vytina, Arcadia, with two courses of 6.5 and 23 km, per the event's own registration page — /en/races/run-vytina-forest-trail-2026.

On Parnon, the highest point is the peak Megali Tourla (or Kronion) at 1,935 m, in Arcadia; the range begins near Ano Doliana in North Kynouria — where the "Nikitaras" Half Marathon starts (see above) — and offers views across all of South Kynouria, per Wikipedia. In South Kynouria, at Astros, the 2nd Thirea Run takes place: 18 October 2026, with five distances from 0.3 to 15 km — /en/races/run-thirea-run-2026.

November–December, and already on the 2027 calendar

After the autumn peak, November and December carry three more events, while four more entries are already scheduled for the first half of 2027 — beyond the Taygetos Challenge 2027 covered above in the mountains section. In total, five of the catalog's entries already concern 2027.
