Spyridon Gianniotis: verified 10km open-water results and medals

Back-to-back world 10km titles

World Aquatics records Gianniotis as the winner of the men’s 10km at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai. Two years later in Barcelona, he retained the world title over the same distance.

He added world bronze in the 10km at Kazan 2015. These three events form a documented sequence of global podiums without relying on third-party retrospective storytelling.

Olympic silver in Rio

On 16 August 2016 he finished the Olympic 10km in 1:52:59.8, the same recorded time as Ferry Weertman. The official Hellenic Swimming Federation report says the placing was decided by photo finish and records Gianniotis in second place.

Bib2Bib therefore describes the result as Olympic silver, not shared gold, in line with the official classification.

From racing to national-team technical support

In a notice dated 29 August 2026, the Hellenic Swimming Federation identifies him as its Marathon Swimming Technical Adviser and head of the Greek delegation for the World Junior Open Water Championships.
