Running races in Crete: a region-by-region guide
Crete has running, trail and aquathlon races spread across almost the whole year, in four regional units: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi. The bib2bib catalog lists 20 such events on the island, from city 5Ks to the 44 km mountain course of the Sfakia Sky Marathon. Below is what runs where and when, and when it is worth timing a trip around the climate.
The racing map of Crete: four regional units
Crete is the largest island in Greece, covering about 8,450 km2 per Wikipedia's infobox figure (the same article states 8,336 km2 elsewhere in its body text), and is administratively split into four regional units: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi. Heraklion is both the capital of the island and its largest city.
In the bib2bib catalog, the 20 verified endurance events on Crete cover all four units: road running, trail/ultra and one aquathlon, spread from June through to April of the following year.
- Chania: 7 races
- Heraklion: 8 races
- Rethymno: 2 races
- Lasithi: 3 races

Rethymno: Kritagenis Run and Amira Run
Rethymno has the fewest races in the catalog, two city road races. The region's longest distance, a half marathon (21 km), is offered only by the Amira Run Experience; the Kritagenis Run tops out at 10 km.
- 1st Kritagenis Run — 27 September 2026, Gerani — 10 km (no half-marathon option)
- 4th Amira Run Experience — 18 October 2026, Adelianos Kampos — 5 / 10 / 21 km
Lasithi: Sitia and Kavousi
Crete's easternmost regional unit pairs the catalog's only aquathlon with two trail events through geoparks and mountain passes.

Trail and ultra in the mountains: Sfakia Sky Marathon and the Cretan Backyard Ultra
The Sfakia Sky Marathon is the most demanding event in the catalog on Crete. According to the race’s own website, runners reach the start in Loutro by ANENDYK ferry, climb through the White Mountains (Madara) to the summit of Pachnes at 2,453 m — the highest point of the range — and descend to Anopoli, covering a total of 44 km with 3,050 m of ascent, 2,480 m of descent and a 10-hour-30-minute cutoff.
The Cretan Backyard Ultra follows the international "backyard ultra" format: athletes run repeated loops until only one runner remains standing, the "last one standing" format. This year's edition in Voritsi, Heraklion, uses two different loops, one for daylight hours and one for the night, according to organiser Diadromes Idaias.
Aquathlon in Crete: SitiAquathlon
SitiAquathlon in Sitia is an aquathlon, not a triathlon: it combines swimming and running, with no cycling leg. The distinction matters if you are looking for a three-sport race — for a full triathlon, you will find one elsewhere in the catalog, not currently in Crete.
When to travel: climate by month, Chania versus Heraklion
Chania and Heraklion have similar but not identical climates (both Csa under the Köppen-Geiger classification), with clear differences in rainfall.
- June (SitiAquathlon): average high 24.4°C in Chania, 28.6°C in Heraklion
- September–October (most road races): average high 20.6–24.3°C in Chania, 23.1–27.6°C in Heraklion, with very little rain
- April (Crete Marathon): average high 16.7°C in Chania, 20.4°C in Heraklion
- December–January (Minoan Athlos, Cretan Backyard Ultra): colder and wetter — the wettest month is December in Chania (171 mm) and January in Heraklion (72 mm)
Practical notes for visiting athletes: airports, ferries and registration
Crete is served by two international airports: Nikos Kazantzakis in Heraklion and Ioannis Daskalogiannis in Chania. bib2bib does not cover flights, transfers or accommodation — for the Sfakia Sky Marathon specifically, getting to the start is by boat, not by road, as the event itself states. For the final word on registration, deadlines and logistics, each race's own official page remains the source to check.
